COP15’s Global Biodiversity Framework must advance Indigenous led conservation to halt biodiversity loss by 2030

By Noella Gray, Associate Professor of Geography, University of Guelph and Victoria Hodson, PhD Student, University of Guelph In the early hours of Dec. 19, the last day of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) conference in Montreal, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted their new post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The goals and targets agreed within this framework, including the widely discussed Target 3, will guide conservation policy and investment for years to come. Target 3, also known as the “30×30” target, calls for the conservation of 30 per cent of global land and sea areas by 2030.
