Six Nations has lost not only one of its most committed leaders but a friend. Bill Montour was Six Nations longest serving elected chiefhas passed at 81. He came up from a councillor to take the helm of the largest Indigenous community in Canada during some of the most controversial periods of contemporary Indigenous politics. Known to many simply as “Chief Bill,” he led Six Nations through changing times when communities not only made demands of politicians at the federal level but were making demands of their own. Without question “Chief Bill” faced some controversy in the community in his hopes and rush to move the community to economic independence.
