By Darrell Greer, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Kivalliq News There may not be a movie theatre in Rankin Inlet, but thanks to the efforts of one man, people can still enjoy an evening in front of the big screen. Gabe Karlik started showing movies publicly in the community in 2019. It all began when his son wanted to watch a movie outside while they were living in Iglulik. He promised to figure something out when they came back to Rankin Inlet and he’s been good to his word ever since. Karlik’s shown the majority of the movies behind Simon Alaittuq Middle School, but he’s also screened a few at the community’s baseball diamond. “I would say I get, on average, about 30 vehicles and 100 people per movie,” he said.
