
Chiefs at the AFN’s Special Chiefs Assembly in Ottawa honoured former chief and politician Elijah Harper.From Red Sucker Lake First Nation, Harper is most famously known for saying no to the Meech Lake Accord in 1990, blocking amendments to the Canadian Constitution that had excluded Indigenous peoples from the political process.Harper died in 2013 after serving in both Manitoba provincial legislature and as a federal representative in the House of Commons during the 1990s.
